Caption: Hairy-footed gerbil (Gerbillurus paeba). This species of gerbil lives in arid regions of southern Africa. They are nocturnal, feeding on seeds and insects. During times of water scarcity, they survive by excreting very concentrated urine, and having low metabolic resting rates. Gerbils belong to the order Rodentia and the family Muridae.
