Caption: Mouse tail. Light micrograph of a cross-section through a mouse's tail. At centre is the tail vein, which contains red blood cells, whose nuclei have been stained blue. A smaller vein (green squiggle) is seen at top centre. The two white circles above the central vein are cartilage of the vertebral column, and each has a large nerve (orange speckled circle) adjacent to it. The large brown ovoid structures are muscles and tendons. The outer layer of skin, the epidermis, is dark brown. Below this is the dermis (light brown), a layer of fibrous connective tissue that contains the hair follicles (blue circles), some of which are associated with sebaceous glands (orange structures). Magnification: x85 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
