Caption: Dead whale. Small whale poisoned by pollution lying amongst the waves on a beach. The whale has been killed by pesticide pollution. The pesticides are leached out of farmland into surrounding rivers where they are taken up by aquatic plants & animals. As pesticides are not natural chemicals, organisms are unable to excrete them. The pesti- cides are concentrated in predators when they eat contaminated prey. Fish-eating whales, which are at the top of the food chain in river estuaries, are particularly badly affected. The pesticides either poison them directly or reduce their immune system, leaving them prone to infection.
