Caption: Sperm whale. Sperm whale (Physeter catodon, or macrocephalus) diving beneath the surface of the water. A sperm whale can remain underwater for up to 90 minutes and can reach depths of over 1000 metres. It does this to pursue its prey, mainly large squid. These giant squid may reach ten metres in length. A fully-grown male sperm whale may be over 20 metres long, although females rarely exceed 12 metres. The sperm whale lives throughout the world's oceans, although it rarely strays into colder polar waters. It lives in groups (or pods) of one or two males and several females and young. The sperm whale communicates using squeaking sounds.
