Caption: Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). This whale is found throughout the world's oceans. It is a migrant, spending the winter in tropical waters, where it breeds and gives birth. For the rest of the year it inhabits colder waters, where it feeds on fish and plankton. The fish seen with the whale here are remoras. They have a commensal relationship with whales and other large marine animals. This means that they derive benefit from their association with the whale (in this case, feeding on scraps and hiding from predators), but neither harm (as in parasitism) or benefit (as in symbiosis) the whale itself. Photographed off Madagascar.
