Caption: Killer whales, or orcas, (Orcinus orca) at the surface. Orcas are intelligent, social animals that live in groups (pods) of up to 40 individuals. They are carnivorous, and feed on a wide variety of animals, including fish, squid, birds and other marine mammals (such as seals and whales). They tend to hunt as a pack, sometimes displaying advanced strategies and forward planning. Orcas are distributed throughout the world's seas, but seem to prefer cooler coastal waters. They may reach up to nine metres in length. Despite their name they are not whales, instead being large dolphins. Photographed off Tysfjord, Norway.
