Caption: Humpback whale baby (Megaptera novaeangliae) near the surface. Babies are born in winter in shallow tropical waters, and suckle for around five months. Tropical waters do not contain the shoals of krill and small fish that the adults eat, however, so they migrate to cool polar seas for the rest of the year. Calves are around 4-5 metres long when born. Adults can reach a length of over 16 metres, with females being larger than males. They live in small groups of less than ten individuals, although at feeding and breeding sites several groups may merge. Photographed off Rurutu Island in the Australes Archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean.
