Caption: Giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) eating bamboo. The giant panda inhabits mountain forests in southern central China. It may venture as high as 4000 metres, but descends to lower-lying regions in winter. The giant panda eats shoots and leaves, mainly of bamboo, which is abundant in its habitat. It is omnivorous, however, and will also eat fish, insects and small rodents. It is solitary, meeting other pandas only to mate.
