Caption: Newborn grizzly bear. 10 day old grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) cub in fur on its mother. At this stage the cub is still blind and deaf as its ears and eyes have not opened. One to three cubs are born after a gestation lasting up to eight months. The mother gives birth in a cave during her winter rest. The young do not leave the cave until the spring, when they are a few months old. A cub may stay with its mother for over a year. The grizzly bear is a large carnivore which inhabits northern areas of Eurasia and western North America. It mainly eats vegetation, although it seems to prefer flesh when it is available.
