Caption: Polar bear cub. Four-month-old polar bear cub (Ursus maritimus) playing with a lump of snow. Pregnant polar bears dig a den out of ice on the land. One to three cubs are born during her winter rest. The mother nurses the cubs in the den, and they do not emerge until the spring. The young stay with their mother for around 18 months. Polar bears live in the Arctic. Adults are solitary animals, meeting only to mate. They mainly eat seals and fish. Polar bears may be the largest land carnivore, weighing up to 700 kilograms and reaching 2.5 metres in length.
