Caption: Brown bear (Ursus arctos) standing in a field of false hellebore (Veratrum sp.) in the Rocky Mountains of the USA. Brown bears in North America are also called grizzly bears. They can be over 2 metres tall and can weigh over 300 kilograms. Like all brown bears, grizzlies are mainly vegetarian, feeding on a wide variety of plants, like false hellebore. False hellebore grows in the spring and summer on moist, open meadows and hillsides, at elevations of 1500 to 4000 metres. It can be poisonous to other animals. Brown bears will also eat meat when available. They are mainly solitary animals, foraging in mountains and river valleys in Eurasia and north-western North America.
