Caption: American black bear (Ursus americanus) on a porch. Black bears are found in a wide range of forested mountain and coastal terrain throughout North America. The forests provide them with their food of grasses, fruits and insects. Black bears are opportunistic feeders and will feed on human food and garbage during the day. They are usually solitary animals. Black bears can range in length from 1.2 to 2 metres. They are agile, and are skilful tree climbers. This bear was photographed in Colorado, USA. The black bears in the western USA tend to have a lighter, browner coat than the black bears of the eastern USA.
