Caption: European brown bear (Ursus arctos). The brown bear is found throughout much of the temperate Northern Hemisphere, although habitat destruction has made the European variety scarce. It now lives in isolated forested areas across Europe. It became extinct in the UK in the Middle Ages due to hunting and habitat destruction. The brown bear is omnivorous, and feeds on a huge variety of foods, including fruits, grasses, roots, fish, small mammals and carrion. It can reach up to 2.5 metres in length and weigh over 200 kilograms.
