Caption: Florida black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus), adult. They are listed as threatened by Florida and are candidates for an endangered listing by the federal government. Only six major populations are left in Florida: in Ocala, Apalachicola, Osceola National Forest, Eglin Air Force Base, Blackwater State Forest and Big Cypress Swamp. Unlike its northern relative, the American black bear, the Florida black bear does not hibernate but rather remains active with short periods of sleep. They generally do not create nor use elaborate dens, but will crush down light brush or grasses to use instead. This one was photographed in Oceola National Forest, Florida.
