Caption: Meerkat (Suricata suricatta). The meerkat is a social mammal that inhabits the savannah of southern Africa. It lives in burrows in large groups of up to 30 individuals. It emerges from its burrow by day to forage for insects and other small invertebrates, although they will also take reptiles, birds and small mammals. When foraging, one member of the group stands watch, emitting a loud alarm call if it spots a predator. The call sends the meerkats scurrying back to their burrow.
