Caption: Fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox). The fossa is endemic to the island of Madagascar, where it is found inhabiting forests. It has a slender body measuring up to 80 centimetres and a tail that can reach 90 centimetres in length. It is the largest carnivore in Madagascar, feeding on small mammals, birds and reptiles. Lemurs make up the majority of its diet. It is a good climber and uses its long tail to balance as it is pursuing its prey through the trees. The fossa is mainly solitary, but pairs will come together to hunt large prey. It is an endangered species, due to predation by farmers and loss of habitat. Photographed at Kirindy Forest, Madagascar.
