Caption: Desert kit fox. View of a desert kit fox (Vulpes macrotis) standing in snow. Kit foxes are native to western North America, living around the Rocky Mountains and the more southern deserts. They live alone in dens which may be in close proximity to those of other foxes. They rarely stray far from their dens in the day. They are nocturnal hunters, and eat rodents, rabbits and hares, lizards and ground-nesting birds. They are among the fastest of all the carnivores, but do not generally chase their prey, preferring to leap out at it while it is oblivious to any danger. It does use its speed to escape from predators, and runs with a zig- zagging motion designed to confuse.
