Caption: Saint Bernard dog. Saint Bernard domestic dog (Canis familiaris) running in snow. These dogs are renowned for their ability to track and help rescue travellers stranded in the snow. Saint Bernards are descended from large farm dogs which are common around the Swiss Alps. It was in St Bernard's Hospice, in the Swiss Alps, that monks first kept these dogs in the sixteenth century. The monks kept the dogs for companionship and to deploy them as rescue dogs for pilgrims trapped in the snow and fog. Saint Bernards are large but gentle dogs with a friendly but protective temperament which makes them ideal family pets. Photographed in Montana, USA.
