Caption: Arctic fox. Young Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) resting. This fox cub is in its grey/blue colour phase. During the winter, adult foxes' fur turns white to camouflage them against the snow. Arctic foxes live on the ice and tundra surrounding the North Pole. They eat small animals such as rodents and birds, although when food is low they will eat practically anything, including carrion, reindeer dung and plant material. While they are mainly solitary animals, pairs formed during the breeding season sometimes stay together after this time. Photographed on Saint Paul Island, one of the Pribilof Islands, Alaska, USA.
