Caption: Black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas). This dog inhabits the open plains of southern and eastern Africa, living alone, in pairs, or in family groups. In areas with plentiful food, large packs are seen. The black-backed jackal is primarily a scavenger, living on the remains of kills made by lions and other large predators. However, it is highly opportunistic and often scavenges on the rubbish left around human settlements. Photographed in the Etosha National Park, Namibia.
