Caption: Maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus). This elusive animal lives in remote grassland areas from north- eastern Brazil to northern Argentina. It is the largest of its family in South America, standing almost a metre tall at the shoulder. It lives alone or in pairs, and is generally nocturnal. An omnivore, it hunts small mammals, reptiles and birds as well as eating plant matter. Due to a reputation for killing livestock, it has been extensively hunted by farmers and is now an endangered species.
