Caption: Siberian tiger. View of a Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) lying in snow. Siberian tigers are the largest members of the cat family, reaching almost three metres in length and weighing up to 300 kilograms. Although generally solitary, tigers tolerate each other's presence at kills or water holes, and may even form groups of a male, female and cubs. They hunt large mammals such as deer. Their territories, which may cover hundreds of square kilometres, are marked out with urine and scent. However, only the males actively defend their territories, and even they will allow unfamiliar males to pass through provided they do not attempt to take up residence.
