Caption: Mating lions (Panthera leo). During the breeding season male and female lions pair up and court constantly, when they may copulate 30-40 times a day. During copulation the female bends close to the ground and the male steps over her, as seen here. The male bites the nape of his mate as he copulates, but only very gently. If his bite is too strong the female will hiss and hit his ears with her paws. P. leo is found in savannah and scrubland throughout sub-Saharan Africa and in scattered areas in India. Photographed in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, South Africa.
