Caption: Feeding cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). This cat hunts small gazelles and other ungulates (hoofed mammals), getting as close as possible to the prey and then breaking into a sprint. The prey is killed with a throat bite, after which the dead animal is opened at the belly. A. jubatus is found throughout non-forested areas of Africa south of the Sahara, and in Arabia from Iran to Kazakhstan. Due to its small size, it often loses its kills to stronger scavengers such as jackals and hyenas.
