Caption: Lynx (Felis or Lynx lynx) standing amongst conifers in snow. The lynx lives in forests in eastern Europe and Asia, and also in the northern parts of North America. It is mainly nocturnal, hunting hares, rabbits, deer and birds. It is known for the long black tufts on each of its ears, which are thought to aid hearing. The lynx also has large furry paws which help spread its body weight over the snow. It is a solitary animal, inhabiting a territory which may cover up to 100 square kilometres when prey is scarce. Photographed in Montana, USA.
