Caption: Grey seal pup. Newborn grey seal pup (Halichoerus grypus) lying on a sandy beach. Its umbilical cord is still attached (pink, centre right). The grey seal gives birth to a single pup after a gestation lasting just less than a year. A pup nurses for up to two months before becoming independent. The grey seal lives in large groups in coastal waters in the North Atlantic Ocean. It feeds almost exclusively on fish.
