Caption: Northern elephant seals. Male northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) with his harem of females on a beach. The male seal is much larger than the females, and possesses an inflatable proboscis on his head. During the breeding season males fight for territories on a beach, which give them access to females. A dominant male may possess a harem numbering up to 40 females by the end of the season. Northern elephant seals are found in the North-East Pacific Ocean. They feed on fish and squid, often diving very deep in order to find their prey. Photographed in Big Sur, California, USA.
