Caption: Walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) resting on ice. These large aquatic mammals inhabit ice floes in the shallower waters of the Arctic Ocean. Both the males and the females possess two large tusks, used for climbing out of the water onto ice and for fighting. Walruses live in herds of up to 2000 individuals. They usually feed on snails, mussels and crabs, but will sometimes capture seals and young whales. These they hold down on the ice with their flippers and tear with their tusks. Photographed in Ny-Alesund, Spitsbergen, Norway.
