Caption: Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) mother suckling her pup. The mother suckles her pup for around four months. She feeds her pup for 1-2 days, then heads to sea to feed herself for 3-5 days before returning. The Antarctic fur seal feeds mainly on krill, but also eats squid and fish. It is primarily a nocturnal hunter. An adult male can reach a length of up to two metres and a weight of over 200 kilograms. Photographed at the Bird Island Research Station, South Georgia Islands. Around 95% of the Antarctic fur seal population breed on South Georgia.
