Caption: Harp seals. Young harp seal pup (Phoca groenlandica) with its mother. Young harp seals are covered with dense fur to protect them from the cold ice on which they lie. Adults lose the fur and develop a thick layer of fat (blubber) which insulates them in the icy waters. The harp seal lives on and around the ice packs of the Arctic. It eats mainly fish, shellfish and other sea creatures.
