Caption: Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddelli). The Weddell seal is a non-migratory pinniped which inhabits fast ice and waters around Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic Islands. The seal's V-shaped nostrils are kept closed while it is at rest and while diving. It can dive underwater for over an hour, and has been seen at depths of 700m. A carnivorous mammal, it eats squid, octopus, fish, krill and other small crustaceans which they swallow underwater without chewing. A primarily nocturnal creature, Weddell seals communicate using a variety of calls. Its whiskers (vibrissae) help the seal's sense of touch.
