Caption: Walruses. Thermogram of walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) rubbing their faces together. A thermogram shows variation in temperature on the surface of an object, measured by the long-wave infrared radiation it emits. The temperature scale is colour-coded and runs from black (4.7 degrees Celsius, coldest) through blue, purple and red to light yellow (warmest, 23.8 degrees Celsius). This image illustrates how the blubber covering most of the head of the walrus insulates it from the cold.
