Caption: Manatees. Female manatee or sea cow (Trichechus sp.) and calf. Usually one calf is born after a gestation of around a year. While adult pairs generally have a strong bond with each other, it is the mother who spends more time raising the young. Manatees are aquatic mammals that live in estuaries, rivers and coastal waters. The three species live in the Amazon, the Caribbean and west Africa. They are entirely herbivorous, eating a wide variety of water plants in both fresh and saltwater. Manatees may be solitary or live in small groups of around six individuals. They can weigh up to 500 kilograms. Photographed in Crystal River, Florida, USA.
