Caption: African elephant skin. The thick hard skin of this African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is wrinkled to provide a large surface area that helps it to keep cool in its hot environment. African elephants are the heaviest land animal, weighing over 7000 kilograms. They are herbivores, eating grass, bark and leaves, and live in large social groups throughout central and eastern Africa. Elephants may live to 70 years old.
