Caption: African elephants (Loxodonta africana) by the bones of a dead elephant. Elephants have been observed to show great sadness when a member of their group dies, and often try to help a dying or dead colleague. On discovering the remains of an unknown elephant, they will often sniff them thoroughly and scatter and partially bury the bones. The African elephant is a social herbivore which inhabits the savannah and forests of sub- Saharan Africa. The elephant communicates using a wide variety of low frequency sounds which can travel great distances through its environment. It is the largest land animal, reaching up to 7000 kilograms in weight in the adult male.
