Caption: Burchell's zebra (Equus burchelli) foal baring its teeth. This is a form of communication, possibly a warning signal to another zebra. The Burchell's or plains zebra is a wild horse that lives on the vast open plains of Africa. Herds of several hundred individuals may have a territory of several square kilometres. The zebra has a gestation period of around one year, and the foal stays with its mother's herd. The zebra is an important prey animal for large carnivores such as lions. Photographed in the Sossusvlei Dunes, Namibia.
