Exmoor ponies (Equus caballus). Mares and a foal grazing. Mares give birth to one foal after a gestation period of roughly a year. Exmoor ponies are native to Britain. They are hardy animals that have evolved to withstand the harsh conditions on Exmoor during the winter. They have hooded eyes and grow a second coat to protect them against snow and rain. Exmoor ponies graze on grass, heather and gorse. They are a very rare breed with fewer than 1,500 ponies in the world, and fewer than 150 wild on Exmoor.
