Caption: Pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis or Hexaprotodon liberiensis) in water. The pygmy hippopotamus is a shy, solitary animal that lives in forests near swamps and rivers in western Africa. It is a strong swimmer but spends most of its time on land. It is most active in the evening when it forages for food; grasses, fallen fruits and leaves. The pygmy hippo grows up to 1.75 metres long and can weigh up to 270 kilograms.
