This image is part of the feature ANIMALS IN HEAT

Caption: Camel. Thermogram of a camel's face (Camelus sp.). A thermogram shows variation in temperature on the surface of an object, measured by the long-wave infrared radiation it emits. The temperature scale is colour-coded and runs from white (9.6 degrees Celsius, coldest) through purple, pink, orange and red to bright yellow (warmest, 32.8 degrees Celsius). The camel is adapted to withstand extreme fluctuations in body temperature. Its coat reflects sunlight, helping it stay cooler in its natural environment. The coat is thinner on its mouth, which is why heat loss is greater in this area`.
