Caption: Red deer. Adult male red deer (Cervus elaphus) showing its large antlers. This animal is also known as the wapiti, or the Rocky Mountain elk. Red deer are found throughout the world in northern temperate regions, from mountain plains to low-lying woodland. The red deer found in the Rocky Mountains in North America are larger than those from elsewhere in the world. The antlers, which are only found in males, are grown each year in the mating season to challenge and fight other males in territorial battles and disputes over females. Red deer commonly eat grass, leaves and tree bark. Photographed in Yellowstone National Park, Montana, USA.
