Caption: Male tule elk (Cervus elaphus nannodes) sparring. This subspecies of red deer is also called the California elk. It is smaller than the other North American elk and is restricted in range to grasslands and marshes in Owens Valley in east central California and Point Reyes National Seashore north of San Francisco. Male elk fight for access to females during the mating season, which is known as the rut. Photographed during winter in California, USA.
