Caption: Red deer stag (Cervus elaphus) in velvet. The red deer is Britain's largest native mammal, with males growing to heights of 1.5 metres to the shoulder. It inhabits woodland and moorland, feeding on grass, but will also eat heather and small shrubs when grass is scarce. Antlers, which only the males have, are shed and regrown every year. As they grow they are covered in a soft blood-filled tissue called velvet. When the antlers are fully grown (just before the start of the mating season in October) the velvet is shed.
