Caption: Muntjac deer. Head of a muntjack deer (Muntiacus reevesi). This deer is native to south-east Asia. It was introduced to England in the 19th century and is now found throughout central and southern England. It prefers to inhabit woodland with dense cover, but is an adaptable species that is now also found on open grass and scrubland. Adaptability has also lead to a varied diet that may include vegetation, fruit, nuts, fungi, roots and flowers. This is the smallest deer in the UK, measuring up to 50 centimetres to the shoulder. It is sometimes called the barking deer because of the dog-like sound it makes when alarmed.
