Caption: Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) with a skin deformity (black patch). The giraffe is the tallest living land animal, growing up to six metres tall. It is a herbivore that inhabits the savannahs of sub- Saharan Africa, living in herds of up to a hundred individuals. A decrease in population numbers, due to hunting, has lead to an increase in inbreeding. Inbreeding often results in genetic abnormalities in the offspring, such as the dark patch of skin seen here. Photographed in Mosi O Tunya, Zambia.
