Caption: Bison herd. View of a herd of bison (Bison bison) grazing in oak (Quercus sp.) woodland. These large herbivores once roamed in vast herbs across the prairies of North America. Extensive hunting in the 19th century reduced its numbers catastrophically. The remaining herds live in scattered areas in North America. The bison's diet is mainly comprised of grass. In winter, some herds dig for grass in the snow, while others move south to warmer climates. In the summer, herds may merge, and males often fight violently over females. The males are larger than the females, and may weigh over 1000 kilograms. Photographed in the Withita Mountains, northwestern Oklahoma, USA.
