Caption: Blue wildebeests. Adult blue wildebeest, or southern brindled gnu (Connochaetes taurinus taurinus), with a calf. A single young wildebeest is born after a gestation period of between 9 and 10 months and is able to run only 30 minutes after birth. Herds of these large antelope, numbering several thousand individuals, inhabit the savanna and plains of southern Africa south of Kenya. They are a major prey animal for large carnivores such as lions and are thus active both during the day and at night. Wildebeest herds are constantly on the move, avoiding predators and searching for water. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, in South Africa and Botswana.
