Caption: Gemsbok or South African oryx (Oryx gazella) at dawn. These large antelope eat grass and leaves and can go without water for long periods. Both the male and the female have horns, which are effective weapons, being held between the forelegs during conflicts in order to impale the enemy. Gemsbok live in savanna in parts of southern and eastern Africa. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, in South Africa and Botswana.
