Caption: Herd of bison (Bison bison) moving across a prairie. Bison are the largest terrestrial mammal in North America. They are known locally as buffalo. Bison live in herds, with females and young forming small bands and mature males forming their own groups. Their diet mainly comprises grass. In winter, some herds dig for grass in the snow, while others move south to warmer climates. Male bison are larger than the females, sometimes weighing over 1000 kilograms. Photographed on the National Bison Range, a refuge in Montana, USA.
