Caption: African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) bull mating with a cow. This large herbivore mainly eats grass, although its diet also includes leaves and shoots of other types of vegetation. It lives in grassland habitats near to forests and water into which it retreats during the heat of the day. The African buffalo is a social animal, living in vast herds which may number up to several thousand individuals. A fully grown adult can weigh 1000 kilograms. S. caffer is found throughout sub- Saharan Africa, except the southernmost regions. Photographed in Ngala Reserve, South Africa.
