Caption: African buffaloes. Herd of African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) on a savannah. These large, cow- like animals reach heights of 1.5 metres and can weigh up to 750 kilograms. Both sexes have two low, curved horns, which have a large boss (protuberance) between them. African buffaloes live on the savannahs and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa, eating grass and other vegetation. They are social animals often found in herds numbering over 1000 individuals.
